Katy Kuhn

Katy grew up in the Bay Area and has been working in a variety of creative fields for many years. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at UC Berkeley (1981), and has worked as a freelance graphic designer through the past decade. In the last few years Katy has concentrated on exploring and expanding her printmaking and painting career, both independently and through workshops with master printers. Katy currently works in her studio in Sausalito, California.“I most often take a blank canvas or plate, pick up a brush and simply begin with a gesture. Perhaps it’s a mood, a landscape, or something right in front of me... I am open to whatever spills forth during the process to evoke something spontaneous, immediate and alive—something I didn’t even know was there when I began. I’m a channel: I listen to the work and let it tell me what it needs... my subconsious becomes conscious. I want the work to be full of things recognizable and ambiguous. I want the viewer to look at it and see something different each time—to never tire of looking at the work.”
