Return to Artists

Mardi Horowitz

My work expresses how I feel about the world in a present moment. My frame of mind in the moment has some kind of joy or poignant story. I also like the thrill of technique and have wanted to draw and paint as far back as I can remember, working at my mother's feet as she designed ladies dresses. I love drawing even when it is frustrating, which it usually is. I feel connected with other artists working on the translation from seeing, to visioning, to rendering. This adds my story to a human story in which we take from reality and make it into a better illusion that then helps us see reality more beautifully.

Training:
I trained at the San Francisco Art Institute when it was still called the SF Institute of Fine Art. I learned the painting techniques that I use from Elmer Bischoff, Frank Lobdell, and Walter Kuhlman. I learned sumi painting from Shozo Sato, and figural representation from Kent Rupp. Aside from seminars and workshops, I have also taken course work at UCLA and the Portland Art Museum School of Fine Art.

Teaching:
I teach drawing by appointment and give courses for small groups at MVAP: Marin's Cultural Center for the Arts, on sumi, water soluble oils, and acrylic painting techniques. Years ago I served as a guest lecturer SF Art Institute (and wrote a book on Image Formation), and taught sumi as a substitute teacher at Ca. School Arts and Crafts.
