Dan Baumbach has been taking photos since his teens.
Growing up in New York City he naturally gravitated to a reportage style. He shot black and white candid
photos on the city streets, one of which was published in Rolling Stones Magazine.
After graduating from college he worked in advertising and fashion photography. He interned with some of the top commercial
photographers of the day. Eventually he opened his own studio. Among his clients were Gentleman's
Quarterly and Eastern Airlines.
Always a passionate person, Dan became consumed with other interests and
left photography on a journey of self-discovery. His journey took him from New York to Paris and India.
Eventually he settled in Marin County, California.
What drew him to Marin was the incredible natural beauty of the area. Instead of wanting to capture his street experiences like he did in his youth, he was drawn
to capturing his experiences when out in nature.
"I like to shoot during the times of the day when the
light is out of the ordinary. Sunrises and sunsets especially during cloudy or foggy conditions can bring
out incredible colors in slide film. Print film is corrected when the lab prints them so the photos look
like they were taken at mid-day. Slide film on the other hand will look red and yellow when used at
the beginning or end of the day and can look very blue when photos are taken under foggy conditions.
Users often ask me if I use special filters or do digital manipulation to get the colors in my photos, but
I use neither. I just make sure I shoot at the times when the light is most beautiful"
